Today we shine the spotlight on Vanessa Jephson, Practice Manager at Ferris Lane Dental in Barrie, Ontario. Vanessa tells us about the importance of leadership and communication in her role, her passion for encouraging female youth sports, and pushing yourself toward success.
How long have you been a Practice Manager with Ferris Lane Dental?
I have been the Practice Manager here since May, but I have been with the team for six years.
What excites you most about your current role?
I love motivating our staff, energizing our daily work environment, and striving to reach new goals.
What skills are essential to being a good Practice Manager within the dentalcorp network?
I believe that communication and leadership skills are key components of excelling as a Practice Manager. If you lead by example and put in the effort, the team will do the same. Regular communication with your team is important. I regularly let the team know they are doing a great job, and we openly discuss what we can do to make our practice even better.
What does your practice do to ensure an exceptional patient experience?
We make sure that every patient feels as though they are our top priority. We take the necessary time to thoroughly explain and answer any questions they may have about treatment. Our team strives to offer our patients an unparalleled experience while also helping them learn about the importance of their oral health.
What advice do you have for dental professionals starting their careers?
It's important to consume as much information as you can. There is a wide variety of components involved in the dental industry, but the more knowledge you can gain on different aspects of your job, the more it will benefit you and your patients.
How do you like to spend your spare time?
I’m heavily involved with the Barrie Elites Volleyball Club in my spare time as the Director of Fundraising. I’m also a Team Manager for an incredible 15U Girls’ team. I truly love being involved and encouraging female youth sports.

“It always seems impossible until it’s done." – Nelson Mandela. I believe this quote applies to all aspects of life. You'll face challenges that may seem impossible until you try and push yourself — and then, suddenly, it’s a success. That feels great!
