We're shining the Spotlight on Grace S., Dental Development Manager, DCI, at dentalcorp's Support Centre. Grace tells us about her passion for helping others develop new skills, what her role models taught her about the value of a strong work ethic and the importance of contributing your perspective in the workplace.
Tell us about your background — how long have you been with dentalcorp, and what were you doing before you joined?
My career started over 30 years ago in a private dental clinic, where I was a receptionist. Later on, I transitioned to a dental assistant role, then a dental hygienist, and finally a restorative dental hygienist. However, my career took a detour when I returned to school to obtain my degree in Adult Education. Before joining dentalcorp in 2020, I oversaw a neurological not-for-profit's Education and Support Services department. I focused on providing continuing education (CE) activities to interdisciplinary professionals who treat people with Parkinson's.
Can you tell me a bit about your role on the team and what a typical day looks like?
I work on the DCI team, focusing on Training and Development for the dental professionals in our network and the Support Centre staff. There is no typical day, but that's what I enjoy most about my job. My day could involve brainstorming different learning journeys, working with subject matter experts, planning and overseeing CE activities, or working cross-departmentally to create tools and resources to support our practices.
What motivates you in your role?
The opportunity to make a positive impact on dental professionals in our network, which ultimately means better oral health care for patients. I'm passionate about helping people develop new skills and grow their knowledge base. Witnessing growth and excitement inspires me to continue to create meaningful learning experiences.
Who was your role model as a child, and what did you learn from them?
My parents are my ultimate role models. They taught me the value of a strong work ethic, emphasizing the importance of hard work to achieve my goals. They demonstrated the power of perseverance and taught me never to give up in the face of adversity. Thanks to their guidance, I'm driven to excel in all aspects of my life.
What advice do you have for new team members joining dentalcorp's Support Centre?
Embrace your authentic self, and don't be afraid to share openly. It's important to remember that every great idea starts from a small seed, so don't hesitate to speak up and contribute your thoughts and perspectives. The fast-paced environment can be daunting, but it provides endless opportunities to learn and grow.
How do you like to spend your spare time?
I love to explore new places and immerse myself in different cultures through travelling. Learning about various regions' unique customs, traditions, and cuisines worldwide is fascinating.
